After a lot of discussion and inquiries, we finally decided to go picnic at Dolalghat. We, ICT (Information & Communication Technology) Team are going there this Sunday. Everything, I mean main program schedule is ready, prepared by Abhinandan. I think shopping will be done on Saturday by Sunil, Digbijaya and Lilaram. We are reserving a micro bus for 2 or 3 hours long drive. Although it’s not my first experience to Dolalghat for picnic, I hope I will enjoy a lot than before. We had been there for picnic from our Church 9 months ago. This place is suitable for picnic because picnic spot is in the bank of Dolalghat river. It’s about 1.5 hours long drive from Kathmandu on the way to Khasa.

I am planning to go Chitwan on first week of January with Vishow for wild life photography. We probably will visit Sauraha and Chitwan National Park. I haven’t been there yet. So I don’t know the details of the location there. I will share my experience later. It will be my first experience. But this is our plan only. Nothing is fixed yet. Let’s see! After Chitwan, we are planning to go Butwal and then Tansen. I will go Tansen with Padam, Nalome, Aksha, Lily and Shrina, but not sure. Depends on their schedule. They are leaving for Butwal tomorrow from office. I am starting this new year by visiting different places of Nepal. This will be really helpful for my portal RealNepal.com.np.

  • Updates of Christmas 2007

How was your Christmas this year? Well, my Christmas was full of fun and blessings. I was able to attend lots of Christmas programs this year. Gone caroling whole six days (Sunday to Friday) at different places of Kathmandu valley. On Saturday, we had ‘Christmas Love Feast’ in our Church after the regular service. Enjoyed a lot there with my friends. After Church, I went to Bhainsepati at Rajesh Dai’s apartment. He had invited all friends of ICT Team for dinner that night. There was ‘Valley Wide Christmas Festival’ on Sunday at Khula Munch, Tundikhel. The worship was leaded by Samu da and message about Christmas was shared by Guruba (Pastor Robert Karthak).

On Monday, there was ‘Christmas Eve Celebration’ at our office. After that program, I went to NIM Lalitpur Church with Padam. We enjoyed a lot with candle lights and campfire. I am writing all these activities in short because I don’t have too much time. There was a grand celebration on Christmas day (25th Dec.) in our Church at Gyaneshwor. As every year, the programme ended after Guruba released balloon with a big banner of Christmas greeting. Please check out some snaps of Christmas programs posted below.

  • Photography is an Art, a way of life, thinking creatively and seeing life, it is our passion, mental and emotional nourishment. All we can say is experiment, experiment, experiment… the exposure is irrelevant because for each flower, the light source is different, just like for people and everything else!

We love flowers, they are neither shy nor temperamental, just extremely ephemeral, and that is one of the things we like to capture and eternalize their beauty. All flowers are beautiful, some through their shape, some through their colour, some through both of them, just like with people. However, we noticed that some flowers are more photogenic than others… just like with people…

Flowers have been cultured and bred for their beauty and their perfume from earliest times and have accumulated a vast and intricate treasury of symbolic associations derived from legend and folklore. Individual flowers have been celebrated in heraldry (rose), in religion (lotus) and in politics (violet) and have become symbol for many countries. In modern time, we cultivate, buy and love to have flowers and blooming plants around us for the colour, it has become a part of our ‘interior design’. Flower lovers will know that there is a flower language.

Every sentiment is expressed in one form or another by delicate flower. Of course, even the experts disagree on the “true meaning” of many flowers and most have different meanings to different people.

Due to diversity in climate and topography, many different varieties of flowers are found in Nepal. They range from tropical flowers found in the Terai to flowers such as rhododendron that are found only above the snowline. We are experimenting on this issue, please give us feedback.

Nepali Isai Mandali (Carol 2007)

  • Will I be a Plone expert from Nepal?

I am doing research on Plone Content Management System for internal and external website of United Mission to Nepal. I think UMN will be the first organization to use Plone CMS in Nepal. There are lots of advantages in this CMS which are not found in other content management systems like Joomla, Drupal, etc. Plone runs on Zope Application Server. Zope provides various basic and advanced services to applications built on top of it. Zope is written in Python. Python is a high-level object-oriented interpreted language. It is a very simple language to learn and use. I have already ordered several books for Plone, Zope and Python. Now learning many things about Plone, Zope and Python. Rajesh Dai (My Team Leader at UMN) is helping me a lot in this project.

Today, there was a small meeting regarding Plone with a person from VSO Nepal. He wanted to know about Plone and told that VSO Nepal is also going to use Plone. He also said that there is no any company in Nepal which works on Plone or Python. I also don’t know about such company in Nepal. After the meeting, Rajesh Dai suggested me that I can be a first Plone expert from Nepal. Will it be true? I don’t know about the future but if I start working hard then it is not impossible.

  • Going Caroling this Christmas

I am so excited and waiting for the time so eagerly. I am going for Carol (Carol is joyful religious song celebrating the birth of Christ.) from our Church this Sunday with worship group. This will be my first experience. My Church is Nepali Isai Mandali (NIM), Gyaneshwor. It’s located at Kalopul, Gyaneshwor. I have been going there since I came here at Kathmandu before 4 years. NIM just celebrated its golden jubilee on November 1, 2 & 3. Click here to view news related to golden jubilee celebration of our Church. All the members of NIM worship team are fully dedicated to God and hence are doing well. Our worship team is leaded by Samuel Karthak. (We all call him Samu Da’.) Check out the snap of our team below which was taken during golden jubilee celebration. I would like to thank Nalome for providing me that snap. I am going to post the updates of our Christmas Carole in few days. Just keep on visiting my website.Nepali Isai Mandali - Worship Group

  • Are you a photographer? If your answer is yes then you probably may be familiar with this software already. Well, if you don’t know about Noise Ninja then this article will be helpful for you.

Noise Ninja is a very effective tool to remove noise and grain from your photographs. This can be used for both digital images or scanned film photographs. You must use this software if you are taking the photographs in low light situation or with higher ISO value. It can improve the quality of your noisy and grainy photographs without loosing important image details. This software is used daily by many professional photographers in the world. You can also try even if you are not a professional. This tool is really helpful and easy to use. But this is quite slow and only available for Windows operating system. If you want to try it today then you can download it’s free trial version at www.picturecode.com. But the trial version watermarks your final image. This is only for experimental purpose. Full version of this software bundle costs around 80 US$. But it worths.

You can use this software as standalone software or as a plug-in for other software like Adobe Photoshop. Noise Ninja is optimized for high-quality results without softening or blurring your photographs. It also includes a noise brush tool which allows you to process only small parts of an image, as well as control over color and luminance channels. It supports JPG, 16-bit TIFF output (48 bits per pixel), batch processing, and multiprocessor execution.

I will come up with the basic operation guide for Noise Ninja in next posts.

Setup Your Own Web Hosting Server

Do you want to host your website in your own home computer and make it available to world? I am going to describe the simple steps to set up your own web hosting server in your computer.

Here I am using WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP) web server which is fully configured and easy to install. The steps listed here do not provide explanations in depth. I assume that you have technical knowledge about how to do which is required.

Step 1: Installing Web Server in your computer

    • Click here to download WampServer. [WampServer is a Windows web development environment. It allows you to create web applications with Apache, PHP and the MySQL database. It also comes with PHPMyAdmin and SQLiteManager to easily manage your databases.]
    • Double click .EXE file and follow the instructions on the screen. The WampServer is installed automatically with Apache, PHP and the MySQL database.
    • Now start WampServer from Start>All Programs>WampServer>Start WampServer if you did not select to start automatically while installation.
    • You can put your web files inside www directory of WampServer installation directory. (Generally c:\wamp\www).
    • To check your web server, type http://localhost in your web browser’s address bar. The hosted folders will be listed in your web browser. This shows that your web server is installed successfully and ready to run web files.

Step 2: Make Your Website Available to World

    • Your new web server responses for incoming requests on port 80. If you have a software firewall or a NAT firewall (router), then these requests may be blocked. You will need to configure your firewall to allow incoming requests on port 80. If you’re having trouble configuring your firewall, check Software firewall configuration and Hardware firewall configuration.
    • Now your web server is accessible from outside by browsing your IP address. You can know your IP address from WhatIsMyIP.com. But browsing your website using IP address is not reliable and practical. Next thing your IP address is always changing. So you have to get static IP for your webserver which is described in next point.
    • Here I am using DynDNS.org which provides free URL that points to the IP address of your web server. Go to DynDNS.org and create your free account there.
    • After creating your account, log in to their website and go to Dynamic DNS and click on Add Dynamic DNS. Choose your desired name (eg. MyWebServer) and select dyndns.org from the drop-down. Now your website URL will be http://mywebserver.dyndns.org.
    • If the IP address field isn’t automatically filled in, enter your IP address. (Get your IP address at WhatIsMyIP.com) Then click on Add Host.
    • After doing all these steps you have to install Dynamic DNS Updating Client which can be found in Support section of DynDNS.org. This will help to update your changing IP address to DynDNS.org.

Now you are done and ready to host your own website from your home computer. Did you find this tutorial helpful or useless? Have any comments and suggestions? Please do post them here.

    Some Computer Stupidities

I got a link from my friend and posted here. Hope you will enjoy.

I work at the computer store on a campus. A few weeks ago, we had a customer call in and ask the following:

    • Customer: “I’d like to buy the Internet. Do you know how much it is?”

    • Customer: “How much does it cost to have the Internet installed?”

    • Customer: “I would like the disc with the Internet on it.”

Also heard in a University store:

    • Customer: “Can you copy the Internet for me on this diskette?”

    • Customer: “I would like an Internet please.”

    • Customer: “When I sign up, do I need to be home so you can come out and install the Internet to my house?”

    • Customer: “I just got your Internet in the mail today…”

    • Customer: “I just downloaded the Internet. How do I use it?”

    • Customer: “Excuse me, could you sell me an Internet?”

    • Customer: “I don’t have a computer at home. Is the Internet available in book form?”

    • Customer: “Will the Internet be open on Memorial Day tomorrow?”

    • Customer: “We’re getting an Internet from you. Are you guys having any problems sending out your Internets?”

    • Customer: “I can’t get online.”
    • Tech Support: “Can you be more specific?”
    • Customer: “It says, ‘Bad username/password’.”
    • Tech Support: “What is your username?”
    • Customer: “Are you sure that the Internet isn’t closed for the night?”

I was extremely tempted to tell him how people in Europe and Asia wake up at odd hours just to use the net.

I just had a call from a customer who wanted to know if she had to bring in her computer to get connected to the Internet or if we could pick it up and deliver.

    • Customer: “My boyfriend says that I need a memory card to run the Internet. Is this where I get one?”

    • Customer: “The Internet is running too slow. Could you reboot it please?”

    • Customer: “We’re going on holiday for three months, can you suspend the Internet for us please?”

I work for a local ISP. Frequently we receive phone calls that go something like this:

    • Customer: “Hi. Is this the Internet?”

    …or…

    • Customer: “Do you own the Internet?”

    …or…

    • Customer: “Is this ‘Internet’ the same as ‘www’ and do you own that as well?”

We would love to be able to say, just once, to these callers, “YES! We are the Internet, and we own all.”

    • Customer: “I have a question about the Internet.”
    • Tech Support: “Ok, what’s your question?”
    • Customer: “How do I unsubscribe from a BBS?”
    • Tech Support: “Uh, well, you should probably contact the people that run it.”
    • Customer: “Well who owns the Internet?”

I once got a “priority” tech support phone call. The guy’s first words were: “I’m a vice president at [major ISP company], and we own the Internet.”

    Overheard on a train ride:

    “The Internet — isn’t that a microchip?”

Overheard near the public Internet terminals in the Kiasma Modern Arts Museum in Helsinki, Finland:

    “Isn’t Netscape Navigator the Internet?”

Some people pay for their online services with checks made payable to “The Internet.”

Had a guy call just recently, asking how to get to the Internet through a word processor.

    • Customer: “What do you mean I have to pay for Internet access??”

    From a discussion on IRC:

    • “I have a problem with my Internet. Anyone know how to get the screens smaller?”

I got a call from an administrative assistant in our office. She said when she opened Netscape it was smaller than normal, so she could not see the entire Internet.

    • Customer: “Do you have to use Netscape to get on the Internet, or do you have to use the program Netscape?”

    • Friend: “I’m going to leave AOL. I think I’ll switch to Netscape.”
    • Me: “Um, Netscape isn’t a way to get on the Internet. It’s what lets you look at the Internet. You need an Internet Service Provider like AOL, CompuServe, or AT&T Worldnet.”
    • Friend: “Oh. I guess I’ll get Internet Explorer.”

    • Tech Support: “If you don’t have a phone line, you can’t connect to the Internet.”
    • Customer: “That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. You guys need to do something about that if you want people to be happy with your service!” (click)

    • Customer: “I lost my Internet. I switched it off last night and turned on this morning, and it’s gone. I just paid $19.95 a month, and I have lost it already. Can you send me another one?”
